Good Evening to All,
Another action packed day, I’ll make this quick and hand over to Lavanya as we’re busy getting ready for tonights meal:
Today was a fantastic day! Even though we were tired from the previous day’s travel, we managed to wake up bright and early because we were excited to visit Phnom Tamao Wildlife rescue center to start our conservation work at Free the Bears. After enjoying a delicious and refreshing breakfast at the hotel we set off for a 2 hour coach ride to the rescue center- where we saw more of the beautiful Cambodian city and streets. On reaching, our friendly guides made gave us an introduction to what Free the Bears is. I was simply amazed by the conservation efforts that have been undertaken by this organization-rescuing 84 bears and several other species from unethical bile extraction and poaching.
In groups, we set out to do different activities at the rescue center, guided by Little Planet and Free the Bears staff. Firstly, we got a tour of the bear enclosures, it was such a lucky opportunity to see the Malayan Sun bears and Moon bears in such close proximity since they are so rare in the wild. Our group also had an amazing experience learning and setting up a camera trap on trees around the center to track species like the bears, civets, clouded leopards, etc. Having seen footage from camera traps on National Geographic documentaries, it was great to learn how much effort goes into setting it up. It also made us practice a lot of teamwork and learn to communicate with each other properly. Another activity we did was preparing food for the bears. We stuffed pineapple jam, cereal, beans, banana and spinach into balls which we threw into the enclosure! Doing this hands on, it was not only fun but so amazing to see how the bears feed using their long tongues and claws. These activities we did really helped me understand the plight of bears around the world, and also taught me teamwork, perseverance and to be caring towards animals. I’m so looking forward to the activities we will be doing in the next few days at free the bears!!
More to come tomorrow, here’s brief selection of pictures from todays adventures,
All the Best,
Team Little Planet
